Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly’s Side Stories typically delve into the thoughts ans history of characters from the original game who only existed briefly before. One key example of this is Ryozo Munakata’s Side Story where we get to learn more about his thought process for how and why he would get Yae out of the Lost Village. This Side Story spans more than half the game and requires a fair bit of backtracking from the player. Ryozo Munakata Side Story Walkthrough
After escaping from the Kusabi at the start of Chapter 4, immediately turn around and head back to the Kurosasa House courtyard. Here you will spot specters of Yae, Sae, and Ryozo. Take a picture of them and you will find the Green Journal 1, which begins this Side Story.
To continue the side story we next need to head to Kureha Shrine, or to be more accurate: behind Kureha Shrine. Here we will yet again see Ryozo’s ghost and find one of his journals. This is the last bit of progress we will be able to make in this quest for a while as the next step isn’t until Chapter 8.
During Chapter 8, you and Mayu will enter the Old Tree and Mayu will pass out. While she is passed out, attempt to leave the tree through the entrance you came from and a Remnant of Ryozo that you can photograph with your Exposure Lens will appear looking over Mayu. After taking his photo, pick up the journal he dropped. While the game will then prompt you to go the storehouse that Itsuki was locked in for most of the game, don’t do this until the final chapter. This is because leaving the Old Tree now will lead to a game over.
When you reach the final chapter of the game and get separated from Mayu, head to the Storehouse where Itsuki was being held. You likely know where this is by now but just in case I shall include an image below to show you where to go. Here you will encounter Ryozo’s specter again and obtain a new journal after taking his picture.
Finally, you’ll find Ryozo’s ghost by the rocks on Misoni Hill, by the entrance to the town. Take a photo of him one last time before collecting his final journal and a crystal which can be used to listen to his final thoughts before leaving the village.
