On May 5 2026, NIS America announced that the fourth and fifth entries in Nihon Falcom’s long-running Trails franchise, The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure, would be receiving ports to the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 in Fall 2026.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure are turn-based JRPGs set in the same world as Falcom’s Trails in the Sky trilogy, taking place a year after said trilogy, yet starring a new party of characters in a different country.

The gameplay in these titles is very similar to that found in the Trails in the Sky Trilogy, with the player being able to move their party members on a 2D plane in order to best position themselves for attacks, but the two games do stand out with the addition of some mechanics that would later become series mainstays in later titles like The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel.

These modern console ports of what is commonly referred to as Trails’ “Crossbell Duology” will feature improved performance (120 FPS), higher resolution (4K on both consoles), and upscaled textures, according to the trailers. The Nintendo Switch 2 versions of both games will also feature mouse support.

The announcement trailers for both of these modern console ports can be viewed below.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and the Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure were originally released for the PlayStation Portable in 2010 and Windows in 2011. Neither of these titles would see an English translation until a fan group known as Geofront handled the project.

Eventually, in 2020, both titles would receive an official English release from NISA, with the assistance of Geofront, for the Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure are currently available to purchase for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The Nintendo Switch 2 and Playstation 5 ports are currently scheduled to release in Fall 2026.
