The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has five major optional guilds for the player to join. The Arena, The Thieves’ Guild, The Dark Brotherhood, The Mages’ Guild, and the Fighters’ Guild. Each of these factions have their own unique questlines which see the player rise through the ranks to go from the new recruit to the full-time leader of the guild. Each of these guilds have their own unlock methods with generally no way to know about them without asking various NPCs about rumors. If you are curious about how to join a specific guild, here is a quick guide on how to join all guilds in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

How to Join All Guilds in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

How to Join The Dark Brotherhood

The first step in joining this dark guild is one that most players may not even consider doing on their own: you must kill an innocent person for no reason. The world of Oblivion is filled with many NPCs just living their lives, pick one and strike them down to begin this questline. You’ll know you have succeeded if the game gives you a message that dark forces witnessed it.

After committing this murder, sleep in any safe bed in the game. Note: Beds in prison will not count for this, so pick an inn just to be safe. After sleeping, you’ll be greeted by a messenger of the Brotherhood called Lucien. He’ll be impressed with your kill and give you a quest to join the Brotherhood.

Your next step will be to follow Lucien’s orders and make your way to a location called the Inn of Ill Omen on The Green Road to kill a man named Rufio. Head there and slay Rufio in the basement, you’ll likely get arrested after this act but it’ll be worth it to join the guild.

Once Rufio is dead, sleep in another bed in order to meet with Lucien again. He’ll congratulate you and you’ll receive a trophy for joining The Dark Brotherhood, however, to formally join it you must next head to the city of Bravil for your new quest A Knife in the Dark.

With A Knife in the Dark being an actual quest instead of a series of vague instructions, you’ll be able to follow a quest marker to The Dark Brotherhood’s headquarters. Simply go to this location and say “Sanguine, my Brother” to officially join the guild.

How to Join The Thieves Guild

While there are multiple ways to learn about The Thieves’ Guild in Oblivion (such as hearing rumors about them from NPCs), the quickest method is to get arrested for stealing items twice. After doing so, a dark elf may quickly sneak you a letter saying to head to the Garden of Dareloth after midnight.

The quest marker for this quest can be a bit finicky as it only appears to actually work if you exit the Imperial City from the Temple District doors, but once you arrive at your destination you’ll be greeted by a thief named Christophe, who will offer you a chance to join the Thieves Guild.

You may have to wait a while to actually speak to Christophe as two other NPCs must show up before his dialogue will actually progress, this shouldn’t take more than a few minutes though. Once you can speak with him, he’ll give you a quest to steal a diary from the house of Amantius Allectus. He’ll also sell lockpicks to help accomplish the task.

If you don’t know where Amantius Allectus’ house is, fear not as the game will give you a quest marker that will point toward a beggar you can pay to learn the location, it will cost you five coins to learn this information though.

This quest requires the player to be really fast as one of the other two thieves will immediately rush to the home and steal the diary from the desk. If you are too slow and they reach it first, quickly pickpocket them to steal it back!

Once you have the diary, rush back to the Garden of Dareloth and you’ll be officially inducted into the guild after a short lecture on the three rules all thieves must live by.

How to Join The Arena

Players will be able to join The Arena immediately after leaving the sewers at the beginning of the game, as you’ll exit them right outside of The Imperial City where The Arena is located. First, you’ll want to make your way to The Arena within the city walls and then take a left down the stairs toward a room called The Bloodworks.

On the left side of The Bloodworks you’ll find an NPC named Owyn, simply talk to him and say you want to be a combatant in The Arena and you’ll immediately be accepted in (though you’ll be called a fool for doing so). With no hoops to jump through, this is by far the easiest guild to join in the game.

Once you have joined The Arena, you’ll be able to progress the guild’s storyline from start to finish simply by participating in fights over and over. Each fight will give a nice gold reward, but be warned that you cannot cheese them by bringing great equipment. As all combatants are required to wear Arena Raiment when participating in battle.

How to Join the Mages’ Guild

Similar to the Arena, joining the Mage’s Guild is just a matter of finding it and talking to an NPC. Each major town in Oblivion (except for the Imperial City) has a Mage’s Guild, simply ask a guard for directions and then walk into the building.

After talking to whichever guild-head NPC you choose, you will automatically be accepted into the guild and given a trophy. To make progress in this guilds storyline you will need to receive recommendations from each and every guildhall in the game.

Advancing the Mage’s guild questline will eventually grant you the ability to make and craft your own custom spells, so be sure to do this before the late game.

How to Join the Fighters’ Guild

Next up is the Fighters’ Guild, which can be found in any city but only allows you to actually speak to an NPC and join in three of them. So if you want to be a part of this guild you’ll need to head to either Anvil, Cheydinhal, or Chorrol.

Once you’ve found one of these NPCs, simply speak to them and you’ll be immediately inducted into the guild. To continue their questline you’ll need to take mercenary contracts from either Burz gro-Khash in Chenydinhal or Azzab in Anvil.

Please note that the Fighters’ Guild is the only guild in the game which has a restriction on whether or not you’re allowed to join. If your character has an infamy score of 100, they will turn you away. So don’t be too evil if you want to be a mercenary.

For completionists, each of the five guilds in Oblivion has ten trophies/achievements tied to them. With the first always popping when the player first joins the guild and final being obtained when you finish their storyline. So doing each and every guild quest in the game will earn your a hefty fifty trophies.
