Like a Dragon fans have been anxiously awaiting the newest title in Sega’s beloved series Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. In response to fans’ anxiousness, Sega released a new trailer for the game during an RGG Studios live stream on their YouTube channel.
During the trailer, we see Kiryu’s duties as an agent working for the Japanese government. At the beginning of the trailer, Kiryu Kazuma, under the codename Joryu, is seen fighting against a man named Kosei Shishudi wearing a Hannya mask similar to the one that fan-favorite character Goro Majima used to wear.
The trailer then switches to showcasing the cast of characters that Kiryu will encounter in the game such as Yuki Tsurono, Homare Nishitani III, and Kihei Hanawa. This trailer is filled to the brim with story spoilers for the game to the point that RGG Studio’s Japanese Twitter account labeled it a spoiler trailer.
After the plot showcase, the trailer went on to highlight many gameplay details about the game as it showed off Kiryu fighting many enemies in the city of Sotenbori using the game’s two combat styles: Agent-Style and Yakuza-Style.
Agent style allows Kiryu to fight against enemies with various gadgets such as exploding cigarettes, drones, and a Spider-Man-esque wire that allows him to pull in enemies and objects from afar. Yakuza style in contrast sees Kiryu fight similarly to how he did in previous games, with a series of quick punches and heat actions that will brutalize any foe.
The trailer then proceeded to show many new and returning minigames that the player will be able to play around Sotenbori. The first of which is the returning hostess minigame where players will be given the opportunity to attempt to woo five girls played by the Japanese actresses Ayu, Ai Kaname, Kson, Ai Sayama, and Kokoro Nakayama.
Like in previous games with this minigame, the player will have to spend large amounts of money on food, drinks, and the entry fee to the hostess club while playing this minigame.
Other returning minigames include the ever-beloved Pocket Racer and Karaoke. While the trailer shows off only a few seconds of Pocket Racer it can easily be surmised that it will play similarly to how it did in Yakuza 0.
Karaoke in turn look to play exactly as it did in every entry in the series that ran on Sega’s Dragon Engine. Other returning minigames included in this trailer include Golf from Yakuza 2/5/7, Billiards from Yakuza 3/4/5/0/K1, and Darts from every entry in the series.
Alongside these returning minigames several new ones have been confirmed. The biggest of these is related to Sega’s classic output as it has been confirmed that eight Sega classic games that have never been playable in previous Like a Dragon games would be playable in Gaiden, including the ever-beloved Alex Kidd.
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name launches on November 9th, 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Pre-orders are available now on all platforms.
