On January 1, 2024, the popular and iconic cartoon character Mickey Mouse finally entered the public domain after 95 years. As this momentous date came to pass many questioned what would be the first property to take advantage of the mascot’s new status.
That question was answered shockingly fast as less than twelve hours after the mouse entered the public domain, a trailer was released on YouTube for a survival horror game named Infestation 88 by the indie dev studio Nightmare Forge Games.
The trailer features two men in hazmat suits being chased through a facility by a nightmarish rat creature that resembles Mickey Mouse as he appeared in the classic cartoon Steamboat Willie.
According to the game’s Steam page, the game will feature both a single-player experience and co-op lobbies with proximity voice chat. Players will need to work together to maintain the facility’s power as they explore new areas and are hunted down by the Mickey creature.
Other details on the Steam page include the mention of many types of extermination gear that the player must use to eradicate rat nests and monstrous fiends hiding throughout the game.

The Steam page also makes mention of the game having multiple episodes, with each episode containing a different classic cartoon character or urban legend. Each of which the player must survive as the infestation spreads.
Infestation 88 is scheduled to be released in the year 2024, there is currently no set release date for the game. More details can be read via the game’s Steam page.
With Mickey Mouse having officially entered the public domain, we will likely see his Steamboat Willie design appear in many forms of media right now. From horror media to feel-good games, the mouse is anyone’s toy from now on.
