Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave features a very unique recruitment system. While you will get a handful of required units throughout the story, most of your party will be comprised of various optional characters that you can find wandering around the city of Dagison. One of these characters in Yang Jie, an alcohol loving monk and one of the first Fire Emblem characters with a Chinese name. Yang Jie Recruitment Guide
Every unit’s recruitment requirements varies depending on your route in order to make sure you don’t rely on the same party for all characters. Some protagonists can get Yang Jie early while others will need to wait quite a while to get him. Here are his recruitment requirements across all four routes.

As you can likely see, Dietrich will be able to recruit Yang Jie almost immediately and won’t even need to pass his quiz. Cai meanwhile likely won’t be able to recruit him until after your second arena battle while Leda and Theodora won’t be able to get him until much later in their routes.
As for the gifts you should be giving to Yang Jie in order to raise his support level, he is a very simple man with simple tastes. He loves alcohol, tales of old distant journeys, and saving the weak. So prioritize giving him fermented drinks and books when giving him gifts.
Now for his special recruitment requirement, the alcohol quiz. He’ll ask you three questions and if you answer them right he’ll join your party. There isn’t a punishment for failing aside from needing to take the quiz again so you can get through this with good ol’ trial and error, but if you don’t want to do that then just give him the following answers

Once you’ve answered all the question correctly, Yang Jie will join your party. He is an excellent early game unit thanks to his high HP stat growth and his personal skill which will allow him to recover a small amount of that HP whenever he defeats an enemy, making him a good starting tank.
