Every protagonist in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has a few characters who will automatically join their party during the early parts of their story. If you grow very attached to a specific character and are worried about not seeing them in the other routes, you won’t have to worry too much as each protagonist can recruit characters from the other clans. Not everyone can be recruited, but most of them can. One key example of this is Esmerelda who joins Dietrich’s clan early on in his story and then can be recruited by other character’s mid-way through their routes. How to Recruit Esmerelda in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave
Every unit’s recruitment requirements varies depending on your route in order to make sure you don’t rely on the same party for all characters. Some protagonists can get Esmerelda relatively early while others will need to wait quite a while to get her. Here are her recruitment requirements across all four routes.

Dietrich will automatically recruit Esmeralda near the start of his story while most of the other characters will have to wait until after the preliminary rounds of the gladiator games end before they’ll be able to convince her to join their party.
As for what gifts you should be giving Esmeralda, fishing rods and hooks are your best play as she seems to really enjoy all fishing related gifts. Cai especially will be able to raise her support level fast as he only needs to bring her to Support level 2.
Now for the big part of recruiting her: Esmerelda’s request. Before she will even considering leaving Dietrich’s party to join yours, Esmerelda will ask you to slay some sea beasts at Cape Damasen near the northern edge of the continent before they can threaten the village of Fina.
This quest expires at the end of November so you’ll only have a few months to complete it during each character’s route. The battle itself will be a small skirmish against six sea beasts. The levels of these creatures scales depending on the time of year you decide to challenge them. If you are doing the quest as soon as it’s available, they’ll be around level 19. If you put it off until later, they will be a higher level.
The map where you fight these beasts is covered in water tiles. To win the skirmish as fast as possible, make sure you bring some pegasus rider units like Alexandra who can completely ignore those environmental tiles. Once you have defeated all of the beasts, return to Dagison and speak to Esmeralda again to recruit her.
