Since I was first introduced to the Steam Deck in December 2024, it has become my favorite console, surpassing the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. I have enjoyed a variety of titles, from indie games like Carrion to classic AAA games such as Skyrim.
Granted, while I love my Steam Deck, I had to choose the most budget-friendly version: the LCD screen with a 256GB hard drive. This means I faced limitations with internal space, even with an added 512GB Micro SD card.
I wanted more space.
There are many options for portable SSDs, but I wanted something easy to manage that would work well with the Steam Deck. The GENKI SavePoint enclosure provided precisely what I was looking for.

First Impression – Solid SSD Enclosure
The GENKI SavePoint enclosure allows adding an M.2 2230 SSD up to 2TB. This is advantageous as it lets you choose an SSD that fits your budget. I used the Fikwot FX953 M.2 2230 1TB SSD (affiliate link) for my review unit. The setup process is simple: open the SavePoint heatsink with the hex wrench, insert the drive, and close the unit.

The SavePoint features MagSafe-compatible magnets that can be attached to an iPhone, or, in this case, the MagSafe ring that is included can be used to connect to the Steam Deck or other handheld consoles. You can then place the SavePoint on the back of the Steam Deck and connect it using the USB-C cable. Alternatively, if you have a charging dock, such as the Anker Steam Deck Docking Station (affiliate link), you can plug the SavePoint into any available USB-C port. Your device will recognize the SSD inside the SavePoint, allowing you to format and use the drive.

Features
The GENKI SavePoint is multifunctional. It includes a 100W passthrough charging port for gamers who frequently travel. You can enjoy prolonged gameplay while the external SSD is connected to a power source and your Steam Deck is charged at the same time.
You can also turn your SavePoint SSD into a Windows Dual-Boot drive. This allows you to run Windows 10 or 11 without partitioning your Steam Deck’s internal drive or altering your device. This will enable you to play PC games and access other services like GOG or the EPIC Games Store. This step-by-step guide from GENKI explains how to set this up.
Another fantastic feature of the SavePoint is an internal capacitor that saves an electric charge. In case of an accidental disconnection of the device, the enclosure can stay on for a moment until the SSD safely shuts off. This is great for protecting your data from being corrupted in the drive.
Connectivity

The GENKI SavePoint Enclosure, offered in Cyber Steel (light gray), Firestorm Peaks (orange), Jade Crystal (green), and Nebula Pulse (blue), is compatible with any device that supports an M.2 2230 SSD.
These devices include:
- Steam Deck
- ROG Ally X
- Smart Phones
- PC
- Mac
- And many other devices
Unfortunately, this enclosure is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch. It’s not the device’s fault; it’s simply how the Switch was designed.
Drawbacks
Some issues regarding the SavePoint enclosure should be addressed. The heatsink can become extremely hot to the touch. While you will not sustain a burn or anything of that nature, it does heat up significantly. The SavePoint is functioning as intended. The heatsink contacts the SSD and dissipates heat to keep the drive cooler.
However, the unit becomes hot, leading to a second issue. The MagSafe ring gets very warm, causing the adhesive to weaken and detach from the Steam Deck. The adhesive should be improved to ensure the device remains attached to the console as intended. While writing this review, I had to order a third-party MagSafe ring.
I received the replacement rings, the pop-tech MagSafe Ring Sticker 2-pack Ultra (affiliate link). According to pop-tech, the adhesive has “superior heat resistance.” It uses high-performance 3M adhesive that can resist up to 194°F (90°C). The instructions suggest waiting 24 hours after sticking the ring before placing a MagSafe device. pop-tech also recommends waiting 48 hours for the best contact between the ring and the surface.
Final thoughts

As a fan of the Steam Deck, I find the GENKI SavePoint useful and a nice addition to my device’s storage space. I like that it’s MagSafe-compatible. However, I wish the adhesive for the metal ring included was better. Hopefully, GENKI will improve that in the future. In the meantime, this is an excellent addition to your gaming peripherals.
