There are 121 Monsters that the Hero in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake can recruit and use to fight in the Monster Arena. These monsters are scattered all across the world and can be easily recruited using either a Monster Wrangler companion or Padfoot, Fade, or Musk to get close enough to talk to them. It will generally be pretty hard to find them on your own, so I decided to make a list of all their locations based on their appearance order through the game.
Recruitable Monster Locations in Appearance Order
Romaria
- Slime – Automatically obtained at the Shrine of Promise as part of the story.
- Spiked Hare – Found northeast of the fountain in Romaria. Only appears at night.
- Antgobbler – Located at the Secret Spot in the canyon north of Romaria.
- Prestidigitator – Discovered at the Secret Spot in a tree west of Khoryv. Appears at dusk.
- Spiked Hare – Found at the Secret Spot between Norvik and Faerie Village, to the south. Appears during the day.
- Cumaulus – Located at the Secret Spot on the snowy coast northeast of Khoryu. May only appear at night.
- Healslime – Found near the Inn in Khoryv at dusk.
- Bubble Slime – Discovered in Skyfell Tower, near the east chest on the 2nd floor.
- Raven Lunatic – Located on the southwest side of Faerie Village. Only appears at night.
- Antgobbler – Found on the east side of Underground Lake B2.
Asham
- Restless Armour – Found at the Secret Spot far south of Asham. May only appear at night.
- Bag O’ Laughs – Located in the northwest part of Asham during the day.
Desert
- Healslime – Discovered at the Secret Spot in the southwest desert.
- Mummy – Found near the Church in Ibis at night.
- Bubble Slime – Located on the 2nd floor of Ibis Castle, in the west area. Appears at night.
- Prestidigitator – Found at the Secret Spot north of Portoga.
- Seaslime – Discovered on the eastern pier of Portoga at night.
- Cumaulus – Located at the Secret Spot southwest of Olivia’s Promontory.
- Overtoad – Found near the southwest exit of Baharata.
- Raven Lunatic – Discovered at the Secret Spot southeast of Baharata.
Alltrades Abbey
- Mushroom Mage – Found at the Secret Spot northwest of Kidnapper’s Cave. Only appears at night.
- Cannibox – Located in Kidnapper’s Cave, straight west from the entrance in the third room over.
- Restless Armour – Discovered at the Secret Spot far southeast of Alltrades Abbey. Only appears at night.
- Whackanape – Found at the Secret Spot northwest of Mur. Only appears at night.
- Slime – Located on the northeast side of Alltrades Abbey at night.
- Shell Slime – Discovered on the northeast pier in Mur.
- Catula – Found on the western staircase of the 2nd floor in the Tower of Transcendence.
Sea
You can find all of these once you get your ship:
- Mushroom Mage – Found at the Secret Spot southwest of Portoga Lighthouse.
- Man O’ War – Located at the Secret Spot on the beach west of Asham.
- Handsome Crab – Discovered at the Secret Spot on an iceberg in the ocean east of the big circular mountains on the northwest continent.
- Seaslime – Found at the Secret Spot in a rock formation northwest of Edina.
- Whackanape – Located at the Secret Spot north of Wayfarer Shrine.
- Firn Fiend – Discovered at the Secret Spot on an iceberg west of the southwest ice island. Appears at dusk.
- Healslime – Found at the Secret Spot on rocks southeast of Australia. Appears at dusk.
- Man O’ War – Located at the Secret Spot on rocks north of Reeve. Appears at dusk.
- Walking Corpse – Discovered at the Secret Spot near the poison swamp in the inlet maze on the northeast continent. Appears at night.
- Wyrtle – Found at the Secret Spot on rocks in the east ocean between the continents.
- Mermaniac – Located at the Secret Spot on rocks north of the snow-peninsula of the northeast continent. Appears at night.
Theddon
- Heedoo Voodoo – Found at the Secret Spot west of Theddon, across the river. Only appears at night.
- Walking Corpse – Located in the basement of the northeast building in Theddon.
- Bag O’ Laughs – Discovered in the Theddon Inn during the day.
Lanson
- Cureslime – Found in the northeast part of Lanson, east of the shrine. Only appears at dusk.
Edina
- Imp – Found in the northeast room of Edina. Only appears at night.
- Cumaulus – Located on the east side of Edina’s rooftop. Appears during the day.
Jipang
- Catula – Found on the northeast side of Jipang. Appears at dusk.
- Overtoad – Located in the southeast rice field of Jipang. Only appears at night.
Ultimate Key
You can get these two once you get the Ultimate Key.
- Slime – Found in the Aliahan Prison.
- Metal Slime – Located in the Romaria Outpost.
Lozamii
- Wyrtle – Found on the northwest island in Lozamii. Only appears at night.
- Handsome Crab – Located on the east island in Lozamii. Appears at dusk.
Pirate’s Den
- Imp – Found in the northwest room of Pirate’s Den. Only appears during the day.
- Rampage – Located at the Secret Spot far north of Pirate’s Den, south of the mountains. Appears during the day.
Eastern Continent
- Rampage – Found on the northwest side of Grimland.
- Hoodlum – Located at the Secret Spot in an oasis near the lake on the northwest side.
- Lump Shaman – Discovered just south of the land bridge connecting the Eastern continents.
- Cannibox – Found at the end of Fifer’s Spire dungeon.
Gaia’s Navel
- Overtoad – Found at the Secret Spot west of Gaia’s Navel, during the solo dungeon trial.
- Restless Armour – Located on the B1 side path in Gaia’s Navel. Use Padfoot, Fade, or Musk to approach the monster.
Orochi’s Layer
- Magmalice – Found in Orochi’s Lair at the southern dead end.
Manoza
- Heedoo Voodoo – Found at the Secret Spot northwest of Wayfarer’s Chapel.
- Minidemon – Located on the rooftop of Manoza Castle.
- Rockbomb – Discovered in Manoza Cave B2.
Ra’s Mirror
You can only get these after getting Ra’s Mirror:
- Minidemon – Found in Persistence at night, near the east horse.
- Bag O’ Laughs – Located in Reeve at night, disguised as the boy by the horse.
- Rockbomb – Discovered in Norvik, disguised as the guy west of the inn.
- Crone Ranger – Found in Dreamer’s Tower, near the Inn.
- Prestidigitator – Located on the Path of Promise, disguised as the guy near the pits.
- Imp – Discovered as the girl on Pyramid 3F to the northwest.
- Mermaniac – Found at the Secret Spot on the island west of Romaria.
- Silhouette – Located in the Teleportal Shrine, disguised as the Priest.
- Imp – Discovered at the Secret Spot on rocks northeast of the northeast continent, east from the Teleportal Shrine in the ocean.
- Lump Shaman – Found disguised as the woman in the left north room in Pirate Den at night.
- Mummy – Located in Manoza, disguised as the guy in the graveyard at night.
Ghost Ship
- Squidzilla – Found at the north end of the Ghost Ship.
- Walking Corpse – Located on B1, on the northeast side of the Ghost Ship.
Necrogond
- Magmalice – Found at the top of Mt. Necrogond after defeating Garboyle.
- Troll – Located in the east room on Level 2 of the Maw of the Necrogond.
- Mimic Monster – Discovered at the southern dead end on Level 3 of the Maw of the Necrogond.
- Shell – Found in the Necrogond Shrine, on the northeast side. Only appears at night.
Everbird
You can find these using the Everbird:
- Boreal Serpent – Found at the Secret Spot northeast of Khoryv.
- Mimic – Located at the Secret Spot east of Ibis.
- Elysium Bird – Discovered at the Secret Spot on the west side of Aliahan Island.
- Restless Armour – Found at the Secret Spot north of Persistence.
- Goodybag – Located in the fully built Merchantburg. Talk to the man north of the fountain at night.
- Hoodlum – Discovered at the northern Secret Spot in the huge forest continent. Requires Ra’s Mirror to reveal.
Castle of the Dragon Queen
- Armful – Found in Baramos’s Lair, at the northeast dead end near the water. Only appears at night.
- Ursa Major – Located on the west side of the Castle of the Dragon Queen. Only appears at night.
- Prestidigitator – Discovered on the east side of the Castle of the Dragon Queen. Appears during the day.
- Cureslime – Found on the west side of the Castle of the Dragon Queen. Appears at dusk.
Tantegel
- Slime – Found at the Secret Spot (boulder) northeast of Tantegel.
- Shell – Located on the west lawn of Galen’s House.
- She-Slime – Discovered in the Tantegel Gardens behind the castle.
Alefgard
- Wyrtoise – Found at the Secret Spot on a small northwest island.
- Elysium Bird – Located on a small island between the large northeast and southeast continents.
- Squidzilla – Discovered at the Secret Spot on a rock in water at the southeast dead end in the inner ocean.
- Seaslime – Found at the Secret Spot in a water inlet on the west side of the southwest continent.
- Armful – Located in the northwest room on B2 of Craggy Caves.
- Green Dragon – Discovered at the Secret Spot on the peninsula southeast of Craggy Cave.
- Chimaera – Found at the Secret Spot in the desert southwest of Damdara.
- Hocus-Poker – Talk to the woman in the southwest corner of Damdara.
- Minidemon – Hiding behind the sign south of the west building in Cantlin.
- Gold Golem – Found at the Secret Spot in the southern plain of the eastern continent in Alefgard.
- Chimaera – Located in the northwest corner of Rimuldar.
- Silhouette – Found in the well in Kol.
- Crone Ranger – Disguised as the guy on the east side of Quagmire Cave.
- Mermaniac – Talk to the NPC through the southwest locked door in Rubiss Tower.
- Chimaera – Found on the 4th floor center room, on the upper path in Rubiss Tower.
- She-Slime – Located northwest of Sanctum.
- Goodybag – Found in the northeast corner of Talontear Tunnel.
- Infernal Serpent – Discovered at the Secret Spot near Zoma’s Citadel.
- Liquid Metal Slime – Located in the B3 Pit Room in Zoma’s Citadel.
- Soaring Scourger – Found at the southwest dead end of the main path on B3 in Zoma’s Citadel.
Post-Game
- Metal Slime – Found at the Secret Spot in the Heavens (the “???” post-game mini world map).
- Green Dragon – Located in the north center room on the 3rd level of the Heavens post-game dungeon.
- She-Slime – Discovered in the jail section of the post-game dungeon.
- Cureslime – Found near the southeast fountain in Cloudsgate Citadel.
- Franticore – Located on the 4th floor of the Citadel Tower.
- Slime – Discovered at the south end of the Temple of Trials.
- Baramonster – Found in the northwest warp portal dungeon in the Temple of Trials.
- Great Keeper – Located in the northwest corner of the northeast trial.
- Xenlon – Discovered on the final path in the Temple of Trials.
