Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a game that rarely holds the player’s hand. Puzzles in this title are designed to take up to hours to complete as the player slowly pieces together hints and clues that will eventually lead them to progression. The game’s tutorial chapter, The Awakening, is no exception to this. In order to set the mood correctly, the game expects the player to find two specific stones in order to open a mystical portal. With a task like that as the tutorial, it’s no wonder so many people get stuck right away. If you are having any trouble at all, please consult this walkthrough for the first chapter of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss.
NOTE: This walkthrough is designed to get the player through the chapter as quickly as possible. It is highly recommended that you examine and search for clues unrelated to the solution in order to fully immerse yourself in the story of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss – Chapter 1: The Awakening Walkthrough
After the opening cutscene, your partner will knock on the door and discover that it’s locked. Thus, our first task is to find a way into the house ourselves. Make your way to the left and point your cursor at the flower pot to get a tutorial for both examining objects and picking them up. Place the flower pot anywhere and crouch to proceed under the wood that was blocking it.
Continue forward until you reach the second floor of the house by climbing a fallen tree. Once you enter the house, make your way to the bedroom on the right to find a ringing phone. After answering it, head downstairs to let your partner in and begin the true puzzle of the chapter.
Fixing the Occult Fresco
In the dining room on the first floor of the house, you will find a room with a strange Occult Fresco made of pages on the wall. This mural is incomplete, though, as several pages are scattered on the floor of the room. In order to figure out what we need to do, we’ll need to complete this mural. To do this, pick up the papers and place them on the mural like this
- Place the sheet of paper that’s on the table on the northern edge of the left circle in the center of the mural.
- Place the piece of paper near the chair on the left side of the left circle in the center of the mural.
- Place the piece of paper closest to the mural on the right side of the left circle in the center of the mural
- Place the piece of paper in the center of the room, on the left side of the right circle in the center of the mural.
- Grab the receipt on the table and look at the back of it to discover it’s also part of the mural. Place it on the right side of the right circle in the center of the mural.
Once the mural is complete, it will look like the image pictured below.
Assembling the mural will grant you the technically optional achievement “Artist”. According to the drawing, we will need to find two specific stones to progress, so let’s continue through the house and find these stones.
Finding the Stones
Pick up any stone in the house to get the tutorial for analyzing materials and using your sonar to locate them. Attempting to scan for minerals in this house will give you about a dozen results. Luckily, we already know exactly which two rocks we need to find thanks to the mural we fixed.
First, head back to the dining room with the mural and look behind the bed that’s on the floor to find a stone called Basalt Rock. Pick it up and keep it in your inventory for now. Next, head to the office on the first floor and pick up the green stone that’s on the shelf near the door.
This stone, Fused Quartz, actually has a similar description to the Basalt Rock. Both stones are described as being broken. Meaning that if you were unable to solve the mural puzzle in the dining room, you still could have potentially sleuthed out that these two minerals were different from the others around the home.
Opening the Portal
With both stones collected, make your way to the basement and open the door. Here you will find a mass of green extradimensional goop with two circular inserts near the center. After watching the cutscene that explains what this is, you’ll be trusted to solve the puzzle.
This mass of goop looks very similar to the Occult Mural we saw in the living room. That means we need to place the same stones into the inserts that were drawn up there. Take out the Basalt Rock you collected and place it in the left insert, then place the Fused Quartz you collected into the right insert.
When both stones are placed in the correct slots, the portal will finally open. Proceed forward and watch the following cutscenes to complete the first chapter of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss.
