Helldivers 2 offers players a variety of stratagems to aid them in battle. These include but are not limited to heavy-hitting weapons, sentry guns, airstrikes, and orbital strikes. Other stratagem options include autonomous drones that will target enemies around the player. These drones provide an extra layer of cover that is incredibly useful when dealing with massive hordes of enemies.

Currently, the only two drones available to use are the Guard Dog and the “Guard Dog” Rover which utilizes different weapon types to damage targets. While both stratagems are incredibly useful, this guide will tackle the Guard Dog vs. the “Guard Dog” Rover in Helldivers 2 and explain which drone has an edge over the other.

Guard Dog vs. “Guard Dog” Rover in Helldivers 2

While both The Guard Dog and the Rover use different weapons, they both function the same offering 360° coverage and having a call-in-time of 5 seconds, unlimited uses, and a cooldown time of 480 seconds.

Once a drone uses a whole magazine, they will return to your backpack to reload and afterward will continue to mow down targets. Since both drones are classified as backpack stratagems, you will not be able to use other backpack-type stratagems while you have the drone equipped.

Guard Dog

The Guard Dog comes equipped with a Liberator assault rifle to deal damage. It comes with 6 magazines which have to be refilled once they are completely used just like your regular weapons. The Guard Dog offers high damage in exchange for a limited ammo supply.

“Guard Dog” Rover

The “Guard Dog” Rover will use a laser rifle to deal damage to enemies. Compared to the regular Guard Dog, the Rover has an infinite ammo supply but will still require reloading once a magazine is empty.

The laser rifle will deal less damage compared to the Guard Dog’s assault rifle, but you’ll have a limitless ammo supply offering more ease of use and consistent damage without requiring a complete refill.

Guard Dog vs. “Guard Dog” Rover Verdict

Both stratagems are very useful, however, the Rover has a slight edge over the normal Guard Dog. Even though the Rover’s laser rifle deals less damage than the assault rifle, not having to refill your magazines comes in very clutch, especially in the heat of battle.

This is especially true in higher-tier difficulties where the enemy density is much higher meaning you’ll run out of ammo quicker as well as during certain conditions where ammo resupply stratagems are limited or completely unavailable.
