Among men, there Is Lu Bu. Among horses, there is Red Hare. This ancient verse forms one of the foundations of Koei’s Dynasty Warriors franchise, as the two are also portrayed as an unstoppable force that breaks through the player’s feeling of invincibility. While Lu Bu himself is not playable in Dynasty Warriors: Origins (a series first), certain unlockables in the game allow the player to feel like this demon as they carve their way through the battlefield. These are the Halberd weapon type and the Red Hare horse, both of which have an obtuse unlock method. How to Unlock the Halberd Moveset
Lu Bu’s Halberd, a weapon that he has had in every game except Dynasty Warriors 6, is debatably the best weapon in Dynasty Warriors: Origins as it is capable of wiping out entire enemy camps within a single devastating combo. To balance out that power though, the weapon is limited to NG+ runs of the game.
Of the two Lu Bu-related unlockables, the Halberd is the easier to unlock. As on a second playthrough of the game, shops will simply sell the Halberd to you for around 400,000 gold.
It should be noted though that they will only sell the Halberd to you if you have already defeated the Lu Bu boss battle. If you chose Wu as your first kingdom to side with, you’ll need to play all the way through Wei or Shu’s chapter 4 before you can use the Halberd.
Despite its NG+ exclusive status, the Halberd is treated the same as any other weapon type in the game, having its own proficiency rank and stats to be gained. Meaning that even if you are not a fan of the Halberd moveset, it is worth experimenting with in order to level up and prepare yourself for the next task: unlocking Red Hare.
How to Unlock Red Hare
There’s more to Lu Bu than his weapon, of course, if you want the full Lu Bu experience then you’ll have to acquire his horse: Red Hare. The unlock conditions for Red Hare are simple, yet difficult: You must beat the Lu Bu boss fight on Ultimate Warrior difficulty without healing or using items.
Ultimate Warrior difficulty is unlocked after completing the game once and is the hardest difficulty in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. On this difficulty, the Lu Bu boss battle effectively turns into a Souls-like where he can kill you within 4 strikes if you aren’t careful.
Defeating Lu Bu on Ultimate Warriors difficulty with this no healing restriction is easily the hardest challenge in the entire game. You will absolutely need to be close to max level, have mastered dodging and parrying, and need a pinch of luck to complete this task.
If you can persevere though, you will be rewarded with the much coveted Red Hare, which is easily the best horse in the entire game in terms of both speed and mounting charge power. Enjoy utterly decimating peons as you swing your Halberd atop this beast, pretending that you are Lu Bu himself.
