DreamWorks’ Trolls Remix Rescue brings the vibrant and musical world of the Trolls franchise to life in a delightful action adventure platformer that will surprisingly please parents as much as their children. Stay with me and I’ll explain why. With a mix of colorful graphics, engaging gameplay, and a story that oozes positivity, it’s a great pick for families looking for a safe, fun, and interactive gaming experience. Available on PS4, PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Steam, the game is an easy choice for a variety of families with young children.

Simple, Engaging, Kid-Friendly

Released on October 27, 2023, Trolls Remix Rescue is perfect for younger players. The core gameplay revolves around controlling a team of Trolls, each with unique abilities, as they embark on missions to save their friends, the environment and ultimately their kingdom, bringing harmony to their world. The “adventure” elements, in the strict sense of the word (think Zelda), are light but rewarding, with a focus on exploration and problem-solving.

Players can switch between Trolls to use their special powers, whether it’s creating bridges, stunning enemies or using the Trolls’ signature “Hair-Jitsu” move to whip their hair at enemies, twirl it to float, and use it to grab, carry, push, pull, throw, and smash objects. Basically, players explore the Troll Kingdom, break stuff, dance, and battle their way through the game. Combat is straightforward and non-violent, relying on creative tools and music-themed attacks that align perfectly with the Trolls’ upbeat nature.

This simplicity makes the game pleasing to the younger crowds while still providing enough variety to keep them engaged. Another cool thing is that besides mainstay characters like Poppy and Branch, players can create and customize their own Trolls to play with.

A Vibrant and Musical Spectacle (graphics)

Visually, Trolls Remix Rescue does a fantastic job of translating the movie’s look and feel into a video game. The environments are bursting with bright colors and whimsical designs that echo the Trolls’ world on the big screen. From lush, multicolored forests to sparkling caves, each location feels like it’s a part of an interconnected fantasy.

The character animations are also pretty good. The Trolls are as expressive and lively as they are in the movies – cute, playful and sometimes even comical. However, what really stands out are the colorful, expansive backgrounds of the levels with their joyfully light hearted vibes.

With all that said, the first negative thing I have to say about the game is that the graphics are kind of buggy at times. Depending on how you adjust the camera, sometimes you will find yourself in between or behind walls and obstacles. This does detract from the gameplay but not in a major way.

Lighthearted Fun with Positive Themes (story)

The game’s story mirrors the Trolls franchise’s core message of friendship, inclusivity, and the power of music. Players are tasked with reuniting their Troll friends and saving their world from a “Threat” (no spoilers here!). While the narrative isn’t groundbreaking, it’s heartwarming and perfectly suited for a younger audience.

The dialogue is sprinkled with humor and catchy references to the Trolls’ love of music. Parents playing alongside their kids might catch themselves chuckling at some of the jokes or tapping their feet to the rhythm-inspired segments. There’s a focus on teamwork and problem-solving that encourages cooperative play and reinforces the game’s positive themes.

Furthermore, the game has these really cool musical “mini games” that you play along your quest. This was a highlight for me since these “mini games” are so much fun and allow you to unlock special items or abilities.

However, not all is glee and joy in Troll Kingdom. Another negative I am forced to mention is the soundtrack, which although has all the elements of what you’d expect in a kids game – jingle like riffs mixed with cartoonish electronic sounds – is average at best and repetitive at its worst. Though many may disagree, at least for me this generated a little aversion towards the game, especially considering how music is such an important theme for the franchise.

Having Fun Together (multiplayer)

One of Trolls Remix Rescue’s standout features is its multiplayer mode. Up to four players can team up, each controlling a Troll and working together to complete missions. This mode is an absolute joy for families, as it encourages collaboration and lets parents join in on the fun.

The multiplayer mechanics are intuitive, allowing players to easily coordinate their efforts without overwhelming younger gamers. Whether you’re solving puzzles or collecting musical notes, the experience feels more dynamic and engaging when playing with other people.

Final Thoughts

Trolls Remix Rescue hits all the right notes as a family-friendly action adventure. Though it has some small flaws in the soundtrack and POV camera adjustment, its colorful visuals, simple gameplay and positive story more than make up for it.

In summary, Trolls Rescue Remix is an excellent choice for parents seeking a safe and entertaining game for their kids, one you can feel safe leaving them to their own devices playing and be sure they’ll not only enjoy doing so, but will also be completely sheltered from exposure to any unwanted “adult” themes such as sexuality, violence, politics and the like.

For families with young Trolls fans—or anyone who loves a dose of glittery fun—Trolls Remix Rescue is a sparkling success, it’s a game that turns screen time into family time, making it a worthy addition to any gaming library.
