Well-known Ubisoft leaker, j0nathan, who has a track record of revealing in-development projects by the French publisher well before their official announcement, has confirmed that the Watch Dogs series is “seemingly done.”
According to j0nathan, Watch Dogs: Legion’s lack of sales resulted in the “cancelation of multiple projects.” Among them was a battle royale game that they described as “fairly original.”
Watch Dogs: Legion was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in October 2020.
Watch Dogs is one of Ubisoft’s most commercially successful franchises. The series has a combined lifetime sales of more than 20 million units. Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2 each sold more than 10 million units. Ubisoft has yet to release the official sales numbers of Watch Dogs: Legion.
The latest installment, Legion, banked on the popularity of the first two games. The game’s post-launch content brought back fan-favorite characters such as the first Watch Dogs protagonist, Aiden Pearce, and Wrench, a supporting character from Watch Dogs 2. But, it wasn’t enough to mask its shortcomings.
What Is Ubisoft Working On Right Now?
By shelving Watch Dogs, Ubisoft has removed several games from its pipeline. This includes Project Q and a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Surprisingly, perpetually in-development games such as Beyond Good and Evil 2 and The Prince of Persia Remake have yet to be canceled.
Ubisoft’s list of upcoming games remains robust despite dropping multiple projects in the past year.
Atop the list is Assassin’s Creed, with nearly a dozen games reportedly in development. But, less than five are confirmed and/or named. The others are “The Rogue Prince of Persia” by The Evil Empire, “Star Wars Outlaws” by Massive Entertainment, “Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence”, and “XDefiant”.
So far, none of Ubisoft’s upcoming games have a confirmed release date.
However, it’s believed that Ubisoft is planning to release Star Wars Outlaws, complete with its controversial Day One DLC, before the current fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025.
