When one tries to list out iconic Ocarina of Time side quests, one of the first to spring to mind will naturally be the Mask Trading Sequence. This side quest and the amusing visual of the Hero of Time wearing silly masks would serve as the basis for Ocarina of Time’s sequel, Majora’s Mask, so if you want to see what inspired that game then this quest is a must see. However, finding who you need to give masks too can be a bit difficult for a first-timer with how many extra NPCs exist in this remake, so if you’re having trouble finding the next person to trade with, here is a full walkthrough for the Mask Trading Sequence in the Ocarina of Time Remake.

Mask Trading Sequence Walkthrough

After giving the guard in Kakariko Village Zelda’s Letter and entering Death Mountain for the first time, return to Hyrule Castle Town and you’ll find that the Happy Mask Shop has officially opened for business. At this shop you can rent masks and then sell them to specific NPCs while wearing them for a profit. Selling a mask will cause the mask shop to stock up a new type that you can sell. There are eight masks in total, but you’ll only be able to sell four of them for the trading sequence. Below is a list of each mask and who to sell it to.

Keaton Mask

The first mask that you’ll buy at the Happy Mask Shop is the Keaton Mask. This mask must be delivered to the guard in Kakariko Village who told you about the Happy Mask Shop in the first place. He’ll pay you a few rupees for it. When you next return to the Happy Mask Shop, there will be a new mask for sale.

Skull Mask

The next mask you’ll be able to purchase from the Happy Mask Salesman is the Skull Mask. This mask will actually need to be sold to someone with a very similar name to it. Make your way down to the Lost Woods by Kokiri Forest and turn left from the entrance to find a room with a Skull Kid in it (If you’re lost please consider consulting our Lost Woods map)

Talk to the Skull Kid while wearing the Skull Mask and he’ll offer to buy it from you. Selling it will make another new mask appear in the Mask Shop.

Spooky Mask

The third mask that you’ll need to sell is the Spooky Mask. Unlike the Skull Mask which needed to be sold to a skull, this mask will need to be sold to someone who is the polar opposite of “spooky”. Though he is in a spooky place.

Make your way to the Kakariko Village Graveyard during the day and you’ll spot a kid walking around with a big stick. Speak to him while wearing the Spooky Mask and he’ll give you his entire allowance to wear it. Selling it to him will also cause one more mask to spawn in the Happy Mask Shop.

Bunny Hood

Next up is a mask that is less of a mask and more of a head accessory: The Bunny Hood. The person you’ll need to sell this mask to isn’t in any of the game’s towns and unlike the other people you gave masks too won’t appear until a certain chain of events happens.

After collecting the three Spiritual Stones and the Ocarina of Time, a Running Man will begin to jog around Hyrule Field during the day and night. This man will run in a large circle around the entire field, so you might need to run around a bit before you see him. He’s incredibly fast, but if you can catch up to and speak with him while wearing the Bunny Hood he’ll offer you 200 rupees in exchange for it. This will also cause the final masks to appear in the Happy Mask Shop.

Extra Masks

After selling the Bunny Hood to the Running Man, four extra masks will appear in the Happy Mask Shop. These four masks can all be rented for free (though you can only rent a single one at a time) and can’t be sold to anyone. They exist for the sole purpose of letting you see extra dialogue with most of the game’s NPCs.

The big standout mask here is the Mask of Truth, as not only will it allow you speak to Gossip Stones like in the original game, but it has also been given a new remake-exclusive feature of allowing you to read the minds of every single NPC in the game in order to learn their darkest secrets!
