Final Fantasy XIV has released one of its final major patches until the release of the Evercold expansion in January. This patch doesn’t add any story content, but it did bring along a new Final Fantasy VII collaboration minigame and special Avalanche outfits for you to dress your Warrior of Light in. While this minigame’s existence is clearly meant to tie into the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, it’s still nice to see these costumes in this title. If you ever wondered what your precious lalafell would look like dressed as Barret or Tifa from Final Fantasy VII but can’t quite find where these new armor sets are, here is a quick guide on how to unlock Tifa’s outfit in Final Fantasy XIV
How to Unlock Tifa’s Oufit in Final Fantasy XIV
In order to unlock the Tifa and Barret outfits in Final Fantasy XIV, you’ll need to become skilled at the new Gold Saucer minigame Keybound Brawler. If you are new to Final Fantasy XIV or have yet to unlock the Gold Saucer, here is a quick guide on how to unlock it so you can rush toward this minigame ASAP.
This minigame and its rewards will only be available for a limited time.
- Reach level 15 with a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job.
- Travel to Ul’dah, Steps of Nald, at X:9.6, Y:9.0 and accept the blue quest “Accept It Could Happen to You” from the Well-heeled Youth in Ul’dah and clear that quest to unlock the Gold Saucer
- Travel to the Manderville Gold Saucer and accept the blue quest Keyward Bound from the Catlike Mammet at X:5.4, Y:7.0.
- This will unlock the Keybound Square and Keyboard Brawler Minigame
If you ever exit the Keybound Square and wish to return, simply speak to the Keybound Gatekeeper in the West Wonder Square at X:6.1, Y:7.3
Keybound Brawler is, as the name would suggest, a typing game that can only be played if you’re using keyboard controls. During this minigame, you’ll play alongside a part of three other players as you defeat three waves of enemies from Final Fantasy VII by typing out the words above their heads.
There are a few tips you should keep in mind during this minigame if you want to optimize your score. The first is proper capitalization. If you failed to correctly capitalize a word, the game won’t punish you as if you spelled it wrong, but you will earn less points for the input.
What the game will punish you for though is the improper punctuation. If you forget to include a period, exclamation point, comma, or em dash (. , ! -) in a phrase that has one, the game will not accept it. This will not only kill your chance at combo points, but will likely give enemies a chance to attack you! Remember, proper punctuation perseveres!
One more trick to keep in mind is that some enemies will have special gimmick. Ahriman for example have a death glare skill that the game will warn you about by displaying a symbol which looks like “No Keyboards” before the attack goes off. When this attack is active, DO NOT touch your keyboard. If you do, you will be stunned for seven seconds.
Similarly, bosses in this mode will sometimes charge up large attacks while a longer phrase appears in front of your party’s shield. When this happens, you and your allies must type the longer phrase in order to reinforce your shield and not take damage from the massive attack.
After clearing the minigame, you will be rewarded with 200-300 MGC which can be exchanged for various Final Fantasy VII themed equipment and items at the Keybound Square. at X:6.2, Y:6.0. Avalanche Leader equipment looks like Barret’s outfit from FFVII while the Avalance Brawler equipment is modeled after Tifa’s outfit.
Both of these armor sets are unfortunately gender locked, with only men being able to wear Barret’s outfit and only women being able to wear Tifa’s. Below is a list of all items that can be bought with MGC and their price.
