Final Fantasy XIV: How to Get All Rare Dyes

One of the key selling points of Final Fantasy XIV is being able to fully customize your Warrior of Light in any way you wish to truly make them your own original character. A large part of this process comes down to choosing the correct outfit and dyeing its color correctly. With the release of patch 7.4 – Into the Mist, the game is removing nearly all outfit restrictions and allowing players to glamor any type of gear on any job, regardless of the job type or the lvl restrictions on the equipment itself. Because of this, many players are currently redesigning entire outfits and looking for the perfect colors to dye them. While a large amount of dyes in the game can be obtained via various in game shops, some of them require the player to either dig a little deeper to obtain them or prepare to open their wallets. All Rare Dye Locations in Final Fantasy XIV

When searching for dyes that aren’t on sale in any of the games normal shops, there is typically four locations you should search for them in

1. The Firmament
2. Island Sanctuary
3. Cosmic Exploration
4. Deep Dungeons

These are often the main locations that Square Enix will put new dye types whenever they’re added to the game. Because many players don’t look toward these non-combat based modes (or in the case of deep dungeons, simply get unlucky with RNG), these dyes can fly under the radar. All dyes can also be purchased on the Marketboard, but as will be highlighted in this list, they can be quite expensive. Please note that all Market prices listed in this article are subject to change as the prices are set by the community and may fluctuate based on factors like supply surplus or more locations to get the dye becoming available.

Dalamud Red

Starting off with Dalamud Red, this dye can be found and purchased for anywhere between 900 to 15,000 Gil on the markets currently. If that’s a bit steep for your price range though, there is a way to grind some for yourself. 

The only way to get Dalamud Red Dye (not counting a select few quests which give it as a reward) is to craft some for yourself. First you’ll need to level a Disciple of Hand job to lvl 30 to unlock the recipe. Thankfully the materials are quite easy to get as you’ll just need a Red Pigment and two crystals (what type of crystal depends on your job) to craft the dye.

Ruby Red

This next dye goes for quite a bit more than the previous one as to get some Ruby Red you’ll need to either prepare to spend between 6,000 and 13,000 gil per dye on the Marketboard or collect some for yourself. Luckily there are quite a few ways to get this dye, unfortunately they involve interacting with a lot of game modes that the player is likely to ignore.

There are several ways to purchase this dye for much cheaper than Marketboard prices, but all of them are time consuming. The cheapest way involves participating in the Firmament side activity for crafters and buying some at a price of 100 Skybuilder’s Scrips per dye. The second method is to play through the game’s Island Sanctuary mode and buy some for 500 Seafarers’ Cowrie.

However, at the time of writing this the recommended method for grinding this would be to instead play through Dawntrail’s Cosmic Exploration mode and buy some for 100 Cosmocredits. This is recommended solely because it is new content that has been updated with the current patch, thus you’ll be grinding it with others as opposed to doing it in complete isolation.

Cherry Pink

Cherry Pink dye is a fair bit cheaper than the previous ones on the list as buying some on the Marketboard should only cost between 5,200 to 8,900 gil per dye. If that’s too rich for your blood though you can still get some from the Firmament, Island Sanctuary, and Cosmic Exploration like the previous dye in this guide.

Carmine Red

Now for an extremely rare and expensive dye. Getting some Carmine Red will cost you between 39,999 to 70,000 gil for even a single bucket on the Marketboard. With that high a price you’ll absolutely want to grind for this dye instead of buying some.

There is only one place to get this dye in the game currently and that’s through Cosmic Exploration. If you want some of this dye you’re going to need to grind and spend 600 Cosmocredits per bucket. Still a difficult grind but at least you won’t go bankrupt.

Kobold Brown

In contrast to the previous rare dyes, Kobold Brown goes for quite cheap on the Marketboard and can be bought for between 340 to 1,200 Gil per bucket. If you want to get some for yourself though, there are a few quick methods of getting it.

The first of these methods is completely RNG reliant as there is a chance your Retainer will bring some back for you if you send them out on a venture. Aside from that though, you can just craft some yourself if you have a Disciple of Hand job at lvl 30 or higher. The recipie calls for 1 Brown Pigment and 2 crystals (which type of crystals depends on your job).
