On the morning of November 6, 2023, PlayStation 4 and 5 users were greeted with a notification from Sony that the systems would no longer be supporting the ability to directly post screenshots and videos to Twitter/X.

The message reads that the ability to post screenshots and videos, share trophies, or even link to a profile on Twitter/X will no longer be supported on Sony’s console hardware as of November 13, 2023.

While this news has come out as a sudden surprise to PlayStation owners, not many are shocked by the console publisher’s decision. Back in March of 2023, current Twitter/X CEO Elon Musk raised the price of Twitter’s API that allows these features to exist. Companies are now expected to pay upwards of $210,000 a month to use Twitter’s API in this way.

PlayStation users will still have methods of sharing their screenshots with friends as both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 allow users to send screenshots directly to a user’s PlayStation app. However many gamers can agree that this doesn’t replace to convenience of being able to immediately upload the images to social media.

Sony isn’t the first major console publisher to abandon their Twitter integration features, as back in April game publisher Microsoft also removed their Twitter Integration features due to API pricing. Leaving Nintendo as the only major console manufacturer to currently have Twitter integration.

The future of Twitter under the ownership of Elon Musk is uncertain. Many internet users and investors currently describing the platform as a sinking ship. PlayStation pulling their support from the platform is only the newest controversy in a long series of them for the platform.

As Twitter integration is leaving the platform in less than two weeks, PlayStation owners are advised to upload any videos they want on the platform now. Uploading videos to the PlayStation app will take extra time and space on your phone to do.
