Over 30 million Call of Duty players have stopped playing this year

Call of Duty Warzone Vanguard loses players

The pace of Call of Duty releases hasn’t changed much in recent years, but the intensity of the following appears to have. Although the franchise’s player counts remain impressive, they are down from this time last year. Over 30 million Call of Duty players have stopped opening the game this year.

Activision Blizzard Q2 Financial Report

Call of Duty Warzone Vanguard 30 million stop playing loses players

The Q2 2022 financial report for Activision Blizzard has been made public. It indicates that slightly more than 30 million Call of Duty players have left the game series.

There were 127 million gamers in June of 2021… 94 million players were present in June of the current year. To be sure, 94 million gamers still represent a sizable number, particularly in comparison to other gaming communities, but it does indicate a decline in the player base.

Naturally, the next issue is why this player base shrank in the first place. Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone appear to be the two main offenders. Activision Blizzard attributes the underwhelming success of Vanguard to its World War II scenario. The devs are currently working on Warzone 2.0, and while it won’t be displacing the first Warzone, many people will likely switch to it.

With the upcoming Call of Duty game, there’s a significant probability that these numbers will increase again. On October 28, Activision Blizzard will release Modern Warfare 2, a follow-up to Modern Warfare 2019. According to them, the game was the most popular Call of Duty release to date, thus a sequel offers a chance to increase the player base once more. The release of Warzone 2.0 is also anticipated later this year.

Of course, Activision Blizzard’s purchase by Xbox may also have an impact. Soon, Microsoft is anticipated to preserve Call of Duty cross-platform. However, Sony maintains that the change in ownership might affect which consoles consumers choose to purchase. It doesn’t seem like removing Call of Duty from Xbox systems would increase the fan base, or get the 30 million other players back.

Call of Duty Warzone is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
