How to Free Up Space on PS5

How to Free Up Space on PS5

Modern-day video game consoles have storage spaces that people decades ago could only dream of. We have gone from games that were a few kilobytes on the Atari, to 6 megabyte PlayStation 2 memory cards, to the massive 825 gigabytes of storage on the PS5. Unfortunately though, with that added storage space has also come an increase in game file sizes. Nowadays it isn’t uncommon for game devs to demand you install games that are upwards of 100 gigabytes in size! This has caused many people to fill up their entire PlayStation 5 hard drive with only a few games. If you don’t know how to delete these games to make space, here is how to free up space on PS5.

How to Free Up Space on PS5

To free up space on PS5, you’ll need to go to your storage menu and delete some games, screenshots, and videos. To reach this menu and delete stuff, you need to:

  1. Start up your PS5 and open the Settings (cog in the upper right corner of the main menu).
  2. Go down through the options and select “Storage.”
  3. From here you will see menus for Games and Apps, Media Gallery, Saved Data, and Other.

From any of these menus, you will be able to see how much storage each game, screenshot, or video is taking up on your console. Games will of course be taking the majority of space, but if you let your screenshots and videos pile up they can take a hefty amount of space.

You’ll also notice that you can’t select the “Other” option which takes up 70 gigabytes. This is because that is where the PS5 is storing the system data that it needs to run.

To delete games from your PS5 hard drive and clear up space, select the “Games and Apps” menu. This will bring up a list of your games and how much space each one takes. From here you can delete each of them with three presses of the X button.

Selecting “Media” will bring up all your screenshots and videos. To delete these, you must press the options button on your controller to bring up a menu. This menu will have a delete button near the top.

Does Cloud Storage Free Up Space on PS5?

One question people ask about the PlayStation 5 is if using Cloud Storage for your save files is worth it. Does having your save files on the web as opposed to the console itself free up space on PS5?

The answer to this question is yes, but not as much as you would think. While save files nowadays have been growing larger, taking up entire megabytes of space, they don’t add up that much over time.

The average save file size on the PS5 can range between 5 megabytes and 50 megabytes. If you are the type of gamer who plays all new game releases as they come out, this will add up and can potentially take up over 10 gigabytes of your hard drive after a few years.

If that amount of space is too much for you and you want to install a small game in its place, then go ahead and transfer your save files to the cloud before deleting them from your console.
