What is a Faction in HOI4

In Hearts of Iron IV, factions are a coalition of allied nations united in both war and peace. To create a faction, the player must possess an appropriate national spirit. At the start of the game, only Germany, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and the United States can create a faction at will.

For other nations, factions may be created through national focuses like Poland or Italy. In joining a faction (other than through a national focus or event), strict rules apply such as having a similar ideology and the world tension being at a certain level.

If at war and not currently in a faction, invitations to join may be sent out by an allied faction (fighting the same opponent) regardless of your ideology.

Once in a faction, all faction members share military access and intelligence with one another immediately. When at war on the same side with allied nations, leaving the faction is not allowed although the faction leader can kick a nation out or disband it during the course of the war.

When in a faction, the alliance will only surrender when the major powers have capitulated. Say Germany invades Poland and the latter joins the Allies, the war will only end in Germany’s favor if both the United Kingdom and France have capitulated.

Any minors that have capitulated already will become government-in-exiles, usually stationed at the faction leader’s homeland.

At the start of the game, there are only three factions present: the Allies, the Axis, and the Comintern, led by the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Soviet Union, respectively.

How to Join a Faction in HOI4

There are a couple of ways to join a faction in HOI4 following the default game rules:

  1. Asking to join a faction – This is done manually in the diplomacy tab and will require you to possess the same ideology as the faction you’re joining (democratic for the Allies, communist for the Comintern, and fascist for the Axis) and world tension to be at a certain value (this depends on the ideology with communists and fascists needing the least amount of world tension and democracies needing the most)
  2. Through national focuses – Going through your nation’s national focus can lead to you joining an existing faction or creating your own.
  3. Through events – If another nation goes through its focus and sends an invite, this will usually come in the form of an event and allow the player to choose whether or not to join the faction.
  4. Through war – If the player nation is on the same side as a faction against a common enemy, they may join the faction either via the diplomacy tab or through an invite as the AI will accept no matter what due to both of them being on the same side of the war.

How to Take Over a Faction in HOI4

To take over a faction in HOI4, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • Have more than twice the deployed manpower of the faction leader (including subjects though this varies depending on their autonomy level)
  • Have more than 150% factories than the faction leader
  • Being a part of every war the faction leader currently is in
  • Not having capitulated
  • Have 200 political power

Once all requirements have been met, an icon will pop up indicating that the player may take over faction leadership from the incumbent leader.

This can be done through the diplomacy tab and after doing so, the player will be safe from any other leadership takeovers for 180 days.

Assuming the incumbent faction leader is also the Spy Master, taking over the faction leadership will not wrestle away the title of Spy Master from the current holder. Separate prerequisites must be met in order to take the title of Spy Master away from the incumbent.
