Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios’ third person shooter Helldivers 2 has proven to be one of 2024’s surprise hits. Despite mild reception to the trailers, the game has been critically acclaimed and selling in droves.
As Helldivers 2’s PvE gameplay and lack of loot system has proven to be a breath of fresh air in an industry currently flooded with PvP games and loot boxes, its popularity among the general public has naturally grown exponentially.
On February 17, 2024, the game hit a whole new level of success as it surpassed over 300,000 current players on Steam! According to sites such as Steamdb, this is one of the highest active player counts in the history of the platform.
As pointed out by Twitter user @Wario64, the game has surpassed Destiny 2’s all-time peak concurrent player count of 316,750 players. With 317,880 players currently, Helldivers 2 is currently only 2,000 players from surpassing Counter Strike’s peak player count.
Furthermore, the game has also long surpassed the peak concurrent player count of Halo Infinite, which peaked at 272,000 players.
Whether Helldivers 2 will surpass this peak has yet to be seen, as the game’s popularity is continuing to grow as word of mouth about the gameplay spreads.
The future of Helldivers 2 looks to be bright, as the game’s social media accounts such as Twitter have been constantly updating players with patch info and teases for the future such as a video of Automatons launching attacks on populated planets, emulating propaganda videos of real wars.
As the game continues to update with new events and the servers continue to be filled to the brim with gamers, players of Helldivers 2 can rest well knowing that their gameplay experience is in good hands.
Helldivers 2 is currently available to purchase for PlayStation 5 and on PC via Steam. Earlier today the game released a patch to increase stability on all platforms.
