EU4 (Europa Universalis IV): How to Release Vassal

EU4 Europa Universalis IV How to Release Vassal

We all might have gotten more vassals than we bargained for in Europa Universalis 4. However, there are 2 easy ways to release a vassal in EU4, just by clicking a button! If, on the other hand, you just want to release a vassal to play as that country or to lessen administrative burdens, we can help with that too. Here is how you can release a vassal, or release a nation as a vassal, in EU4.

How to Release Vassal in EU4

EU4 Europa Universalis IV Break Vassalization

There are 2 ways to release a vassal in EU4:

  • Use Diplomacy
  • Lose a War

The second option doesn’t sound great for most of us, so let’s first talk about diplomacy. To release a vassal in Europa Universalis, you can quickly do this by:

  1. Open the Diplomacy tab and click on the country you want to release.
  2. Scroll down to the Influence options, open them up, and select the “Break Vassalization” button.
  3. “Confirm”

If the vassal’s liberty desire is under 50%, you will receive -25 prestige and -200 relationship damage with the released vassal. If their liberty desire is over 50%, you can break the vassalage for only -25 prestige.

Some players may not be able to do the first method. Here is how you can also release this EU4 vassal: You can declare war on someone and, at the peace offer, you can select to release your vassal.

How to Create a Vassal State

If you want to release a vassal state in EU4, here is how you can do this:

  1. Open the Diplomacy tab and click on your own country.
  2. Click the Flag button on the bottom left.
  3. Select the country you want to release.
  4. (Optional) Tick the box if you want to start playing as the released subject.
  5. “Send”

Doing this can help your campaign a lot, as many released vassals keep their cores. You can start declaring war left and right to get their cores back! Also, you won’t have to spend admin points to core these territories, if you give them back to your vassal.
